Oh snap I'm behind, I'm behind! --This week we learned to play traditional Korean instruments! I was really looking forward to doing this because although I'm not very good with instruments, I really like playing them. Sadly I did not get to play one of the instruments that I really wanted to have a go on but it's okay, I wasn't able to make myself look like a fool!
We started the lesson off looking at a video of the person who made this kind of music (Samulnori) more popular, Kim Duk Soo. Although it all looked a bit silly at first you could see how much the performers were into and a part of the performance itself. Everyone was moving around and moving themselves to the beat of the music.
Now, I can't really remember the names of all the instruments very well but they were made up of Kwaenggwari ( a small gong ) , Jing ( a larger gong ), Janggu ( an hourglass shaped drum ) and the Buk ( a barrel drum, similar to that of a bass drum ).

Here we have the hourglass shaped drum which is the one I wanted to have a go at most but also looked rather difficult. There were two sticks which were used in specific hands for specific sides of the drum.
THAT is what looked the most difficult here. but the sound it made was rather sharp and loud I must confess I wasn't really expecting it at first but then BAM... that woke me up...
Our instructor took the people who played this instrument through a series of sequences which changed each time and actually looked rather confusing to do so well done to the people who did it xD
I actually played the Jing

Possibly the easiest instrument there. haha. well it was fun but it was like one of those massive gongs you only see in movies or in the special effects folder on your laptop. Each of the instruments represented an element ( or close enough ) the Jing represented the wind, Janggu represented rain, the buk represents clouds and the Kwaenggwari represents lightning. They do make sense in the way in which they sound but you'd have to hear them to believe it xP
It was fun playing as one whole group together even though half of the class was missing and had gone to MCM EXPO. I would like to do this again so that i could have a chance to play the other instruments which I didn't get chance to look at properly. We also went through a series of warm up activities to try and get our bodies into the motion of the music so that we too could perform it well ourselves. It was quite weird to be honest but everyone was doing it and we were all having a bit of a laugh at the same time.
now since I was late posting this, it is quite rushed! Sorry about that! In the next post I promise to be more detailed! ^-^;
