Week 3! Hangeul week! For those who don't know, Hangeul is the current Korean writing system in Korea. It is not the language spoken, but the writing system. [Our lecturer made that very clear] Now, I had looked briefly at Hangeul before but not enough to actually sit there and learn it. However I spent around half of my train journey to London actually looking at my cheap little book on learning Hangeul. It is not difficult. Of course it may take some time to adapt and remember what all the characters sound like, however it is not that difficult to learn. I am not saying that Korean is easy to learn, no way. But their writing system is easy to read. Read - but not always be able to understand. In all honesty I feel as though I can read most of the writing now apart from a few of the doubled up vowels. they're the ones which trick me!
It was really fascinating to find out all about the history of Hangeul and when it was created. Since the lecturer was a lecturer from SOAS in London he made even more interesting points about certain things being disputable and questionable which I found intriguing. The KCC has something called the King Sejong Suite. I haven't really got any clue what that it but during this lecture I at the very least found out who King Sejong is and why he's important. It was also interesting to learn how the characters for the Korean alphabet were created, through the shape of your mouth when you say them! I had no idea and was truly amazed to find this out. It almost sounds childish but is clearly not and is being used today.
After the lecture we got given some snacks which I was ever so thankful for as I was starving and so so thirsty. they were sweet so it was really good to have.
After our small break we went back into the room and the desks were covered in paper ready for us all to write our names in Hangeul with ink and brush. We got taught how to hold the brush in the proper manner and how much ink we needed on the brush. I practised a few times and they were quite.... bad. However I was pretty pleased with my end result.

I had done calligraphy writing before, for the brief time I was in university, in my Japanese class, we did some Japanese calligraphy. I also found that difficult at first but quite fun to do.
This week we have homework so I will be posting that up here on my blog soon.
Next week we get to learn a kpop dance! As a dancer myself I can hardly wait for the weekend. i didn't know we would actually be learning a dance as it wasn't indicated in the course outline but I am overjoyed that we are! I can't wait to find out what song's we're learning!
Until next week! :PLabels: calligraphy, Hangeul, kccuk, korean, kpop, kpop academy, soas, writing
